Our very final #Southwell140 exhibition object, and your choice is...

THE CAT PRINT BRICK 😽
The brick was voted as the most popular object in the Cathedral 140 Exhibition. That naughty Roman puss has obviously left its mark on you all! 🐾

Thank you for following our exhibition from February to November this year. We’ve had a lot of fun sharing all 140 objects with you! And enjoyed your thoughts about each object along the way. If you've enjoyed our 140 exhibition please also consider making a donation of what you can, to keep this heritage preserved for another 140 years!

Remember, just because the exhibition is over doesn’t mean you can’t still come and visit us! A lot of the objects featured are permanently on display here, like the windows, artwork, carvings and garden. Please do come and say hello and enjoy this stunning and glorious place with us!

STEWARDS’ CHOICE:
THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT
We asked our Stewards to tell us their favourites from a Minster filled with treasures. The Flight to Egypt was very popular but there are many more.
“A beautifully carved piece showing influences of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Beautiful woods, colours and textures. Mary, Joseph and the baby fleeing for their lives. Superior expressions on the camels’ faces and world-weary donkey. Robert Kiddey lived and worked in Newark. We should make more of him and his work.” Wendy
Our Stewards are here to welcome you and answer any questions. You can find them in their blue gowns.

THE KELHAM MADONNA
This beautiful wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child was crafted in 1952 by Alan Coleman. It was gifted to the Minster in 1974.

“This unusual image of Mary and Jesus reminds me of the Minster’s dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of our links to the story of Christianity in Nottinghamshire. I often stop here to pray on my way into or out of the Cathedral.” - Canon Precentor, The Revd Dr Richard Frith

DESIGN PORTFOLIO 🧵
The Needlework Guild bring the Minster to life with their beautiful, handcrafted textiles.

Embroidery has been a key part of Christian worship since the early church. By the 12th century, when the Minster was built, embroidered vestments and church furnishings were as important as its stonework, stained glass and woodwork.

HONORARY LIBRARIAN'S CHOICE:
‘FESTIVALIS’ BY JOHN MIRK📖

This book was given to the Minster by Henry Raper who wrote his name in the book. He was a Vicar Choral here in the 1670's. Recently we had the pleasure of showing it to a direct descendent of his son who emigrated to the Carolina's in the 1680's!

“This book is what the Library is all about, a book that was copied and loved over 500 years ago. Written by a Canon and later Abbott, of Lilleshall Abbey, probably in the 1380's, in Middle English, it is a book of sermons to be read on saints or feast days such as Easter or Christmas Day.” - Victoria Arthurson, Honorary Librarian

VERGERS’ CHOICE:
WILLIAM’S VERGE ⚜️
This verge was made by Steve Ottewill of Ottewill Silversmiths and Jewellers and was designed with William and the Minster in mind, with input from his family and the then Head Verger Andrew Todd.

As William had been a keen cyclist, the circular design at the head represents a bicycle wheel, the cross in the centre his Christian faith, and the coloured
glass the windows of the Minster. Hop leaves are used in decoration both to reflect the carvings in the Chapter House and William’s fondness for an occasional, strictly off-duty, post-Evensong pint.

“The verge was commissioned in 2009 as a memorial to my colleague and friend William Vigar, who died very suddenly the year before at the age of 29. As the only Verger in the present team fortunate enough to have known and worked with William l feel a very personal and deep affection for this verge whenever I carry it.” - Michael Tawn, Deputy Head Verger

Visit us and see this and the whole of Novembers's exhibition up close! There's something for everyone. Entry is free. Donations welcome.

RECTOR CHORI'S CHOICE:
‘HEAVEN’ BY ROXANNA PANUFNIK 🎼
Southwell Minster Choir Association commissioned this anthem to celebrate the end of the Leaves of Southwell Project.

Panufnik created an 18-language chorus of 'leaves' which intersperses George Herbert’s poem ‘Heaven’. He takes inspiration from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Hera condemns Echo, from that day on, to only be able to repeat the last words addressed to her, and nothing else.

Auction of Promises
In recent years, SMCA came together with other well-wishers to put on a spring and autumn Auction of Promises.

These helped fund the post of Organ Scholar – a one or two year role for a young person to hone their skills and gain experience of working in a busy and stimulating environment. The gavel, presented by a former Dean of the Minster, was used by the auctioneer. www.southwellminster.org/minster-music/choir-association/

It reminds us of a different era when the choristers were not paid pocket money but relied on donations from the congregation, distributed on Boxing Day. This treasure was uncovered in a storeroom by chance in 2009.” - The Retiring Dean of Southwell, the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan

‘TREEBECK’🌳
The tree was situated next to one of our buildings called ‘Trebeck’.
It was around 140 years old – planted around the same time
we became a Cathedral.

"Treebeck was the last of his line, standing tall through countless storms – until the fateful night of Sunday 21st January (2024). By Monday morning he lay fallen, finally joining his fellow sycamores who had bowed out before him, one even leaving its mark on a lay clerk's brand-new car. In the end, even the strongest must yield." - Claire Connely, Head Gardener

Green Man🍀
he is one of the winning entries in the Green Man craft competition held in 2020.

The green man reminds us that we cannot survive without the natural world which surrounds and sustains us. The carvings of the Green Man help us with some of our school visits to the Chapter House, where we see carved examples of God’s creation.

The green man, or foliate head, is an architectural motif of a face of, or surrounded by, foliage, which spreads out from the middle of the face. We have a lot of stone carved green men in the Chapter House at the Minster – can you find them all?🔎
